Individual Learning Differences
All students have a unique learning style and therefore require individualized learning techniques to help them retain and generalize information. By implementing Words Their Way, a vocabulary routine, students are able to learn and progress at their own pace. An initial PSI is taken on each student to determine where he or she should begin, the example below shows the student working on CVC medial vowels. Each week, the students are given a set of words and two categories, (for example A and O, medial position). On the first day, students cut out their words. On days two through four, students sort their words and practice decoding the words, both in small groups and one-on-one with the teacher. On the fifth and final day, the students glue down their words and are assessed on which column the words are under. The PSI can be given every 6-9 weeks to asses student progress. Based on the PSI, the students may be given another set of words for the following week or may move to a new category to work on.
Words Their Way worked very well with the student below and within 4 short months, the student is able to decode words by herself and not only sort the words into their column, but explain why all the words are in that column (example: "These all say "eh, eh, eh, eh" referring to short e). Words Their Way incorporates individual learning differences into the curriculum and allows each learner to move at their own pace.
